SUMMARY:Red McAdam • Honky-Tonk
DESCRIPTION:Although he was born in the industrial heart of New Jersey\, Red’s mother Maggie made damn sure that he would be reared on folk and country music. Red’s father\, a lifelong bass player\, taught him to play the mandolin\, banjo\, bass\, and guitar. Forever restless\, Red ventured through dozens of genres before returning to his Country roots. He ventured out West on the heels of heartbreak and made a home in the high desert of Northern Arizona where he now lives.

SUMMARY:Rock-n-Roll Zocalo Party
DESCRIPTION:Roselit Bone / J Graves/ Linda From Work – three of our favorite bands on one epic night! \nAfter over a decade of touring\, Roselit Bone have perfected an infectious and intense live show that has transfixed crowds in a nightly conversion ritual. Previously described by Oregon Public Broadcasting as “a unique type of gothic country rock that borrows heavily from Mexican ranchera music\, rockabilly and the same lonely and wide-open spaces that inspired the classic Spaghetti Western scores of composer Ennio Morricone\, the band – led by frontwoman Charlotte McCaslin – have deepened\, shapeshifted\, and outdone themselves on their fourth full-length record\, Ofrenda.” \nJ. Graves is passionate dance-punk. Tense relationship rock\, sanguine lyricism\, guitar music\, chord changes that sound like secret longing\, a rhythm section that thuds\, skitters\, and melts over the determined voice of Jessa Graves. \nLinda From Work is a fierce rock band hailing from Seattle. Meeting at the intersection of garage\, glam and dance-punk.

SUMMARY:Water is Power with L&J Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Gila River Festival. \nLocation: Seedboat Center for the Arts\, 214 West Yankie Street \nThe Gila River Project investigates one of America’s most expansive ecosystems. Named as America’s most endangered river in 2019\, it persists despite the severe threats of climate change\, the demands of ranching\, agriculture and mining\, and the impacts of recreational and residential development. Exploratory expeditions took place via an Airstream trailer that served as a mobile laboratory/studio. Location-based research considered the politics\, history\, culture\, and resource management in 9 regions along the river\, from its origin in the Gila Wilderness to its junction with the Colorado River. A custom designed medallion was installed at significant site-specific locations that represented the focus in each region. The Gila River Project aspires to illuminate the relationships that define what can be referred to as ‘eco-plasticity\,’ the inherent characteristics that enable continuous change in response to physical\, cultural\, and biologic elements. \nThe L&J Ranch is an art + research venture that explores the relationship between ‘place’ and the life it enables. Joel Slayton is an artist with expertise using media technology to explore complex systems and networks. Lisa Johanson is a clinical research scientist studying motor control and neural plasticity. Through their collaboration\, Joel and Lisa are developing a series of artworks that probe the relationship between land-use and sense-of-place.

SUMMARY:A Walk Around The Garden
DESCRIPTION:Part of this year’s Gila River Festival. Register now; space is limited. \nParticipant Limit: 12\, Fee: $30\nDifficulty: Easy; The terrain is flat\, mostly not wheelchair accessible.\nMeet at the Gila Valley Library Garden at 411 Highway 211 Gila NM. \nThe Gila Valley Library has created a demonstration garden that is a center for educational programs for young people and the general public\, helping to foster an understanding of the numerous benefits of community forests\, pollinator habitats\, and application of conservation principles. Various techniques have been employed to conserve water\, enhance soil microbes\, and help plants thrive in the harsh desert climate. This garden is the first demonstration site for the application of New Earth Compost\, a biologically diverse and fungal dominant compost that works in partnership with plants to capture carbon in soils\, increase soil water holding capacity\, fix nitrogen\, and improve plant and soil health. \nThis walk around the garden with Monica Rude will include discussion of native and climate-adapted plants to attract pollinators and other beneficial insects\, how homeowners can turn their yards into wildlife habitats\, desert gardening techniques\, composting\, weed management\, water conservation techniques\, mulching\, the importance of saving seeds from and growing natives instead of cultivars. Please bring a hat\, sunscreen\, and plenty of drinking water.

SUMMARY:New Earth Project Site Visit
DESCRIPTION:Part of this year’s Gila River Festival. Register now; space is limited. \nBioreactor Tour with Mike and Carol Fugagli\nParticipant limit: 30 Fee: FREE\nDifficulty: Easy \nMeeting location will be at the New Earth Project site along San Vicente Creek. From Gough Park in Silver City take Hudson St. ( Highway 90) south to Ridge Road. Turn left on Ridge Road and then left on Mobile Drive. Signs at the end of the pavement will direct you to parking at the New Earth Project site. See map. \nSilver City\, like many small mountain communities in the American southwest\, is directly in the crosshairs of climate change. To have a livable future\, not only do we need to reduce current carbon emissions\, but carbon drawdown from the atmosphere is a necessary component in all climate models. To respond to this emergency\, the Upper Gila Watershed Alliance launched the New Earth Project\, focusing on carbon sequestration\, food security\, fertilizer and pesticide replacement\, soil health\, food waste reduction\, and landfill methane reduction. The centerpiece of this project is an innovative technology: Johnson-Su composting. Johnson-Su composting is a static\, aerobic composting system that specializes in the production of a microbially diverse\, fungal rich compost that can greatly increase the soil’s potential to sequester carbon\, increase water retention\, fix nitrogen\, and increase plant growth and food production while greatly reducing the need and high costs associated with nitrogen/phosphorus fertilizers and pesticides. The New Earth Project’s Johnson-Su bioreactors are highly replicable using food waste from school cafeterias\, and shredded woody biomass acquired from urban silviculture and local forest thinning projects. This program is implemented in tandem with a grade school curriculum and youth employment plan. On this field trip\, we will demonstrate how a Johnson-Su bioreactor is filled and describe how it works\, discuss how we make biochar using the Ring of Fire\, and visit a greenhouse heated with a biochar energy system.
